HOW TO APPLY

Regular admission

Applicants must have a high school diploma and be 17 years of age by the beginning of the intake term. 

Mature admission

Applicants must be 20 years of age or older and have been out of full-time high school for at least 1 year by the beginning of the intake term. High School diploma not required for mature students, but applicants must have a minimum of 50% in English 10-1 or English 10-2 (or equivalent).

Online applications are processed through ApplyAlberta, an application service used by most post-secondary institutions in Alberta. You will need to pay a non-refundable application fee to complete your online application.

All applicants are required to provide official transcripts.

Transcripts from Alberta Institutions

If you have attended an Alberta high school, we will order Alberta Learning high school transcripts for you. If you have attended one of Alberta’s participating post-secondary institutions, we will order these transcripts as well. You must provide any other transcripts.

Transcripts from outside Alberta

If you have attended any institution outside of Alberta you must make arrangements with your Department of Education to have your final grades forwarded directly to MacEwan University. If an official paper transcript is issued, a copy must be brought to the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre office to register or when meeting with the advisor.

It is recommended that unofficial transcripts be sent as soon as possible to ensure your application is processed in a timely manner. Original transcripts must be submitted upon arrival.

Letter of Intent Guidelines

• Tell us about yourself and highlight your career and personal aspirations.
• Identify your goal post-secondary program.
• Describe how you feel the Foundation Program pimacihisowin will help you achieve your educational goals.
• Maximum of 1000 words

Submit the required additional documents to the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre office after you have applied to the program and received a letter of acknowledgement from the Office of the University Registrar.

You will need to track your application throughout the admission process to ensure you meet requirements and submit transcripts/educational documents by the appropriate deadline. Track your application online using myStudentSystem and monitor your myMacEwan Gmail account for related emails. You can access both myStudentSystem and your myMacEwan Gmail account through myPortal.MacEwan.ca.

Confirm admission

Once you receive an offer of admission or conditional admission, you must accept or decline the offer by the deadline. You will log in to myStudentSystem to give your confirmation of admission.

If you are unable to access myStudentSystem from your location, contact the Office of the University Registrar for assistance.

Pay your admission confirmation deposit

Pay your admission confirmation deposit. by the deadline indicated in your offer letter. This deadline is also posted in myStudentSystem. If you do not pay your deposit by the deadline, your offer of admission will be withdrawn.

There are several ways to make a payment.

You are responsible for checking and adhering to all posted dates/deadlines and university policies. International students must arrive within 2 weeks of the program start date; you will need this time to get settled in.

The Academic Schedule lists all important dates and deadlines for the coming academic year including when classes start, tuition deadlines, add/drop deadlines, withdrawal deadlines, and exam periods.

Tuition and fees

Tuition and fee amounts owing are updated overnight. If you adjust your enrolment, make sure you check myStudentSystem the next day to verify the amount you owe.

Make a Payment

There are several ways make a payment.

kihêw waciston at MacEwan will supply orientation information and help you prepare for university studies. They can help you:

• Change your address
• Set up a Canadian bank account
• Get your MacEwan University photo ID card
• Pick up your U-pass (bus and train)

You will meet with a kihêw waciston advisor to enrol in classes. The advisor will make a personalized educational study plan for you based on your current academics and goal post-secondary program.

All students entering the pimâcihisowin program will be required to complete a placement test unless their Canadian High School Transcript is within two years.

MacEwan University has many resources to help you succeed in your academic career. Don't wait until you are having problems to take advantage of these resources.

Assignments

Talking to your instructors often about assignments or course content is a smart way to succeed in your courses. Your instructor is an expert on the content and will be marking your assignments. Don’t be shy! Your instructors’ office hours are listed on your course syllabus.

Final Exams

Exam schedules are listed in each course syllabus. You should consult your instructors as well as your exam schedule in myStudentSystem prior to the exam period. It is your responsibility to know when and where your final examinations are scheduled and to arrive on time.

Final Exam Deferrals

Requests for deferred final exams are considered only when you miss final examinations due to acceptable extenuating circumstances such as illness accompanied by a signed note from a doctor, death in the family, serious family crisis, accident, etc. You must request a deferred exam no later than 2 business days after the missed examination. Permission to defer a final exam is not automatically granted by submitting a request. See a program coordinator for permission.

If you need to request a deferral for a midterm exam or assignment, talk to your instructor.

Before you finish your courses in the pimâcihisowin foundation program, you should do a number of things to ensure a smooth transition to your post-secondary program of choice.

Apply to your post-secondary program

Apply to your chosen post-secondary program early. Many institutions begin accepting applications 9-12 months before classes start and popular programs fill up quickly. You will be required to submit a number of documents in your application, and, if these documents are coming from out-of-province or out-of-country, you will need to budget extra time.

Talk to an advisor

Advisors in the Academic Advising Centre can answer your questions about admission requirements, deadlines and documents. We strongly recommend that you talk to an advisor before you complete your upgrading.

If you plan to attend another institution, you will need to contact that institution directly to determine admission requirements and procedures.

Remember: as a student, you are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of your program course selection. This means that even while you are upgrading in the Foundation program, you should be consulting with the post-secondary program you plan to apply to.
