Sexual Violence Support Guide Program
The Sexual Violence Support Guide (SVSG) is a leadership initiative for MacEwan employees. Offered by the Office of Sexual Violence Prevention, Education and Response and Wellness and Psychological Services, this nationally recognized program is designed to engage MacEwan employees as partners in addressing sexual violence. Participants in the SVSG receive training to:
- Develop an understanding of sexual violence as a social and public health issue.
- Learn to respond to disclosures of sexual violence in a trauma-informed manner.
- Gain an applied understanding of MacEwan’s Sexual Violence Policy.
- Learn to make appropriate referrals as part of an effective response to disclosures.
- Engage with theoretical and practical approaches to sexual violence prevention.
After you've completed the program, you can choose to take on the role of a Support Guide, serving as an information resource to students and colleagues about sexual violence support and education services. The Support Guide team is made up of employees from across the university who are working to create a culture of consent and support at MacEwan.

Workshops
Our workshops focus on building employee capacity around sexual violence prevention and response.
This session prepares staff and faculty for their role in responding to sexual violence disclosures from students. Participants gain a better understanding of sexual violence, the definition of consent, the Sexual Violence Policy, our rights and responsibilities as MacEwan community members, as well as strategies we all can use to appropriately respond to disclosures.
This session introduces a theoretical framework for understanding sexual violence prevention efforts in post-secondary environments. Participants gain a better understanding of their role in ending sexual violence and learn practical strategies to integrate prevention into their role at MacEwan.
While all communities experience sexual violence, 2SLGBTQ+ communities are disproportionately subjected to sexual violence and face systemic barriers to accessing support. In this workshop, we examine the intersections of sexual violence, heterosexism and cissexism, learn about foundational support skills, and explore strategies for responding to sexual violence in ways that affirm the identities and lived experiences of queer and trans survivors.
MacEwan University is committed to providing support for all students, staff and faculty impacted by sexual violence through trauma-informed practices. In this session, participants increase their understanding of trauma, discuss its long-term health impacts and influence on behavior, and explore how principles of trauma-informed practice can be applied at an organizational and interpersonal level.
We provide customized educational programming tailored to the specific needs and desired learning outcomes of your group.
Please contact our Senior Program Manager, Sexual Violence Prevention and Education for more information or to book a training session.

A syllabus can be used to communicate your values, describe your commitment to a respectful learning environment and provide information about accessible resources for students who may need support relating to sexual violence. A simple message added to your course outline can communicate to students that you support their well-being and are committed to a safe campus experience for everyone. This may be especially helpful if your course includes content relating to sexual or gender-based violence.
This guide provides a brief overview of how to respond to disclosures or incidents of sexual violence on campus.
