A couple of months may have passed, but Aldricia Chong and Bridgette Crabbe still have a hard time believing they had a part to play in promoting Canada’s biggest night in music.

In February, the Bachelor of Design students, co-presidents of the Design Students Organization, opened their inbox to find an invitation to help promote the 52nd annual Juno Awards. Working alongside industrial design students Winnie Uong and Christine Liang from the University of Alberta, the student designers helped create community-based installations to promote the awards in West Edmonton Mall, Londonderry Mall and Kingsway Mall. But finding the right materials, design and structure to make their ideas work wasn’t easy.

“Being able to adapt was probably one of the greatest takeaways from this experience,” says Chong. “The process evolved a lot, and there were a few flaws in our original design, but we worked as a team to figure things out.”

Their final installations looked great, and Chong and Crabbe used their graphic design skills to create supporting social media graphics, video reels and banner signs. Seeing each of those applications out in the world had both designers feeling a lot of pride and excitement.

“When you’re in the middle of the process, you’re focused on the moment you’re in – making sure you export files correctly and other details like that,” says Chong. “But when we stepped back and looked at what we were a part of, it’s pretty amazing. So was being invited to watch the Junos live at Rogers Place.”
