BRIDGE to CANADIAN NURSING
Clinical Practice
Nurses learn by doing. In the Bridge to Canadian Nursing program you participate in hands-on learning experiences through clinical experiences and at the Clinical Simulation Centre on campus.
Clinical experiences
Clinical practice offers a diverse range of opportunities, focusing on areas of greatest need in Alberta’s health care system, such as rural placements or placement in specialty areas.
Bridge to Canadian Nursing students participate in two clinical experiences as part of the final course. The first is instructor-supervised. The second is a preceptorship led by a Registered Nurse (RN). This applied training is designed to help you transition from learner to practitioner. Placements will be scheduled in the spring and summer and may include weekends. Rural placements are possible.
International students must have a co-op work permit before starting field placement, clinical practice or practicum. A co-op work permit is different from your study permit; it is an additional permit that authorizes international students to participate in work that is integral to their program of study. If you will be working with vulnerable populations in a health, community or medical field, you will need an up-to-date medical exam by an IRCC-approved panel physician before applying for a co-op work permit.
Ask MacEwan International about the documents you need to have to apply. You should apply for a co-op work permit 4-6 months before the start of your field placement, clinical practice or practicum as current IRCC processing times are lengthy.
Clinical simulation
Immerse yourself in lifelike patient care. In the Clinical Simulation Centre, simulated-learning spaces mirror real-world environments. Here, you interact with computerized mannequins, anatomical models, digital learning platforms and patient-actors while safely integrating classroom theory with clinical practice.
Health professionals are entering a unique and demanding time in the history of health care, facing more complex patient needs, increased technological demands and the responsibility of coordinating patient care within interprofessional teams. The Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC) prepares you for this dynamic environment, providing a supportive, safe space that encourages you to take risks and gain critical experience before entering real situations with real people in clinical settings.
