What to do

Get out

  • If safe to do so, move quickly away from the area and threat.
  • Warn others if possible.
  • If you come across an injured person, do not stop, but report the person’s location to emergency personnel when you are in a safe place.
  • Call 911 when safe to do so and provide as much information as possible.

Hide

  • If you cannot get out, find a safe place to hide.
  • Lock and barricade the door.
  • Turn off lights and close all windows and blinds.
  • Remain calm and quiet and silence your mobile phone.
  • Stay out of sight and do not open the door under any circumstances.
  • Remain in place until emergency personnel arrive at your location to provide assistance and directions to leave.
  • Do not leave your hiding place if the fire alarm sounds, unless you are in imminent danger of a fire.

Fight

  • As a last resort, fight for your life.
  • Act with as much aggression and physical force as possible towards the person causing you harm.
  • Commit to your actions and stop the threat.
