SAFE AT MACEWAN

Severe Windstorm or Tornado

If you are on campus when a severe weather event occurs, such as a tornado or severe windstorm, sheltering in place until the threat has passed may be your safest option.

What to do

When directed to shelter in place for a tornado or severe windstorm:

  • Take shelter in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the ground floor, if possible.
  • Stay away from outside walls, windows and doors.
  • Do not use the elevator.
  • Avoid large rooms, if possible.
  • Stay close to the ground and protect your head from flying objects.
  • Remain at the safe location until advised that it is safe to leave.

If you are outdoors or in a vehicle

  • Lie in a ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building.
  • Be aware of the potential for flooding.
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
