SAFE AT MACEWAN
Severe Windstorm or Tornado
If you are on campus when a severe weather event occurs, such as a tornado or severe windstorm, sheltering in place until the threat has passed may be your safest option.
What to do
When directed to shelter in place for a tornado or severe windstorm:
- Take shelter in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the ground floor, if possible.
- Stay away from outside walls, windows and doors.
- Do not use the elevator.
- Avoid large rooms, if possible.
- Stay close to the ground and protect your head from flying objects.
- Remain at the safe location until advised that it is safe to leave.
If you are outdoors or in a vehicle
- Lie in a ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building.
- Be aware of the potential for flooding.
- Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
