SAFE AT MACEWAN

Hazardous Materials

A hazardous material is any item or agent (biological, chemical or physical) that has the potential to cause harm to life, property or the environment. You may be directed to “shelter in place.” This means it is safer for you to stay indoors than to go outside.

What to do

When directed to shelter in place because of a hazardous materials release, follow the directions of campus security, building announcements or a municipal emergency agency onsite.

  1. Stay inside the building and close windows and doors.
  2. Turn off anything that moves air. (Facilities will turn off the air intake to the buildings.)
  3. Await further instructions. Do not leave the building until you hear the all clear announcement.
