SAFE AT MACEWAN

Fire

Fires can happen anywhere, at any time and have a devastating impact on the university community and physical resources. All alarms must be treated as real and building occupants must evacuate when the alarm sounds.

You can prepare for a fire emergency by knowing the location of primary and alternative exit routes, fire alarm pull-stations and fire extinguishers.

If you see fire

  1. Pull the fire alarm.
  2. Leave the building using the nearest exit. Do not use the elevator. Close doors behind you.
  3. Call 911 and campus security at 780-497-5555.
  4. Proceed to the nearest muster point. City Centre Campus
  5. Do not re-enter the building until the "All Clear" is given.

Note: If you cannot evacuate, call 911.

If you hear a fire alarm

  1. Carefully listen and follow the instructions that are given over the public address system.
  2. Leave by the nearest floor exit. Do not use the elevator.
  3. Close doors behind you, but do not lock them.
  4. Follow the instructions provided by campus security and/or staff.
  5. Proceed to the nearest muster point. City Centre Campus
  6. Do not re-enter the building until you hear the all clear announcement.

If you need help getting out

  1. Go to the nearest stairwell exit.
  2. Call 911 and/or campus security at 780-497-5555 and provide your location.
  3. Ask others who are evacuating to advise emergency personnel of your location. Do not obstruct the stairwell access while waiting for assistance.

If you cannot evacuate

  1. Close the doors between you and the fire.
  2. Call 911.
  3. Then call campus security at 780-497-5555 and identify your location.
  4. Stuff damp material, if available, around openings to prevent smoke from coming in.
