University is one of the biggest financial commitments you’ll ever make. Tuition and textbook prices may seem daunting, but there are ways to make paying for your education easier.

MacEwan University gives millions of dollars in scholarships, awards and bursaries to thousands of students every year, and applying is easy. Scholarships, awards and bursaries are free money. Plus, you can apply for as many as you want, just as long as you’re eligible. Don’t leave money on the table!

Here are a few simple steps to increase  your chances of getting a scholarship, award or bursary:

1. Know the difference between scholarships, awards and bursaries

Scholarships are given for academic performance, awards are based on criteria such as volunteerism or leadership, and bursaries are based on financial need.

2. Log in

All scholarship, award and bursary descriptions and applications can be found in your student portal (log into MyPortal.MacEwan.ca, select myStudentSystem and then the Financial Aid tile). You will only be able to apply when an application is open. Don’t worry, you’ll receive an email notification whenever something becomes available!

Typically, applications open for the Fall and Winter terms in the first week of classes and remain open for approximately one month.

3. Start with the basics

Once you’re in the application, the system automatically generates a list of scholarships, awards and bursaries you may be eligible for – how easy is that? The system uses your basic information, which may include your program, GPA and year of study. From that list, you can narrow down which scholarships, awards and bursaries you want to apply for.

4. Read through the application process

Some applications require a little more effort. You may need to provide supporting materials, such as reference letters or an essay.

5. Make time

Make sure you start your application early so you have enough time to gather all the information you need. Carve out time to work on your applications and apply for as many as you can. Don’t lose sight of each application’s deadline – you might miss out on an opportunity to get free money.

6. Plan ahead
