Every year, students have the opportunity to showcase their research and findings at MacEwan University’s Student Research Day (SRD). This year, interest is higher than ever, with 301 students set to share their work – a 17 per cent increase over last year’s already impressive 257 applications.

“It is wonderful to see how our student research system continues to grow and thrive. This growth is a reflection of MacEwan students’ innate curiosity and drive to conduct scholarship on today’s pressing societal issues – and our faculty members’ dedication to mentoring them,” says Dr. Craig Kuziemsky, associate vice-president, Research.

“Student-engaged scholarship is an important way of providing a diversity of experiences to complement what students learn in the classroom. Students develop research skills around developing and disseminating knowledge, which can help them in their future endeavors.  We are so looking forward to seeing their hard work and dedication showcased at SRD as they share their unique and groundbreaking projects with peers and faculty.”

Students from across 22 disciplines are scheduled to present, supervised by more than 150 faculty members.

This year, there will be 146 oral presentations, where students explain their work – covering topics from using artificial intelligence to support nurse practitioners to strategies for Canadian automotive companies navigating geopolitical issues to a proposed app to connect tutors with students – to an audience in a classroom.

Student researchers can also explain their research, project displays and creative installations to attendees in the Robbins Health Learning Centre in a poster or display presentation. The 102 planned presentations – ranging from psychological predictors of success in dancers to improving the quantification of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants to identifying giant sloth fossils in Alberta – mark a 30 per cent increase over last year.

Research can focus on class projects, work-integrated learning and Honours theses. This year is also the first time students have the chance to screen their documentary projects and video essays.

Check out unique presentations on virtual reality, community partnerships, climate change and more, all on one day and in one location.
