I found the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity the first time we were back on campus during the pandemic, and I've been here an almost embarrassing amount of time since. It's like a home away from home – a lively place where I get to see friends, meet new people, and, most importantly, feel included. People here care about what's going on with you, and even if they haven't exactly lived what you're living, they are willing to listen.

This community has gotten me through so much. Anytime I've struggled – academically or personally – they've saved my butt. They've been what I needed every single time. And the centre is for everyone, not just people who are queer. As long as you're being respectful and kind, you're welcome.

Pride Week is a huge deal here, and I've been volunteering since I discovered the centre. This year, I'm part of the Queer Leaders in Training program, and we're taking the lead in creating and planning Pride events. There's a Pride march, rainbow market, art exhibition and resource fair.

Resources are my thing. I'm a psychology student, so I know the importance of knowing there is support, and that it's discreet and easy to digest. We've got everything from QR codes with tools to help explain the idea of pronouns to safer sex supplies. It's all free for students (you can pick up a kit in Roundhouse without anyone ever knowing).

But one of my favourite events every year is the Pride Prom, which we're turning into a gala this year. My high school graduation happened during COVID, so I didn't get to cross the stage, I didn't get to wear that fancy outfit, and I hadn't fully embraced my gender identity. Pride Prom meant I got to relive that experience I had missed out on, and in a more authentic way.

Inclusivity and authenticity are what Pride Week at MacEwan is all about. You can be yourself here – and we have a whole week dedicated to it. It's especially important, I think, in turbulent times. It's a form of advocacy and security. At MacEwan, we have a dedicated space and dedicated people who are working really hard to create a safe space for people.
