When audience members take their seats for the upcoming 2025/26 Theatre Season at MacEwan, they will be treated to a wide variety of productions – from big musicals to intimate storytelling that delves into current issues.
“Next year's season has something for everyone,” says Dawn Sadoway, department chair and assistant professor in the Department of Theatre. “Stories with chills, thrills and dancing skills are a dynamic part of the line-up showcasing talented MacEwan theatre students at their very best!"
The season kicks off with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, directed by Ellen Chorley, Theatre Arts ’04, in the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab from October 29 through November 2.
An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life-un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.
From November 26 to 30, the Triffo Theatre will be the place to be when Carrie: The Musical, directed by Ben Smith, hits the stage.
Carrie Wight is a teenage outcast who longs to fit in. At school, she’s bullied by the popular crowd and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s dominated by her loving but controlling mother. What none of them know is that Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power and, if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it.
Kate Ryan directs Monceros in the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab from March 4 to 8.
Monceros centres around Faraday, an offbeat 16-year-old, who dreams of being a large animal veterinarian and speaking to large crowds, but truthfully just feels utterly ordinary. When a classmate’s death interrupts her personal agenda, she decides not to waste another moment and sets herself, and those connected to the dead boy, on a quest to get what she thinks he wanted: a unicorn assistance certificate from the Unicorn Society of Lethbridge. Monceros is a modern-day version of The Wizard of Oz, with bite.
The season wraps up with A Chorus Line, directed by Jim Guedo, running from March 25 to 29 in the Triffo Theatre.
Celebrating 50 years, A Chorus Line is a stunning musical capturing the spirit and tension of a Broadway ensemble audition. Exploring the inner lives and bittersweet ambitions of professional Broadway performers, the show features one powerhouse number after another.
