Welcome back to campus! As you get back into your routines – and get used to writing 2025 – here are some events to make the longest month of the year seem a bit shorter. Plus, some important Winter term deadlines to keep in mind.

Mental Health Week

The holidays are over and January can be a challenging month, so we’ve got events that focus on personal well-being and supporting others. At MacEwan, we are looking forward to focusing on community and connecting during Mental Health Week, from January 20 to 24. Events focus on personal well-being and supporting others. Kick things off with a resource fair in the SAMU Student Lounge, then spend the rest of the week creating community through crafting, taking in a screening of Inside Out 2 (there will be free snacks!), and sessions that will help you create balance in your life and recognize signs of someone considering suicide.

Music and the arts

Did you know that art and music can also support your well-being? Take in a concert with the Showcase Band and Country/Roots Ensemble on January 11 and enjoy student pricing for the upcoming Garneau String Quartet concert

There’s also a new exhibition at the Mitchell Art Gallery. Register to attend the opening reception of Sydney Frances Pascal: kw7íkwl̓acwmíntsinlhkan | i dream of you, or visit the gallery anytime before March 29 to see works that explore reconnection with family and culture through relationships with land, water and language.

Listen to Edmonton author Benjamin Hertwig read and answer questions about his work at the January 16 installment of the Department of English Visiting Author Series.

Research, scholarships, a business conference and more!

If you’re a student researcher, now is your time to shine. Applications are now open to showcase your hard work at Student Research Day. Looking for research funding? Take in a session to demystify the process of applying for grants – it also includes information on how to find a supervisor.

While we’re talking about funding, attend a drop-in session to learn more about scholarships, awards and bursaries on January 21 – and bring your laptop to get on-the-spot help.

Business students, make sure you register to attend the Business Student Conference on January 24, where you’ll be able to engage with industry leaders, network with your peers and gain insights you won’t find in the classroom.

If you know a high school student or recent grad who is interested in the Bachelor of Design program, we’re hosting our annual Design Student for a Day on January 29.

Curious about studying abroad? There are a handful of advising sessions throughout the month, plus an Education Abroad winter fair

It’s never too early to start prepping for exams. Register for a Study Skills session to help you conquer midterms.

Is there a faculty member who you think is deserving of recognition? Nominate them for one of our teaching awards before January 31.

Deadlines

Before you go – there are a few important deadlines to keep in mind this month. January 15 is the last day to add or drop a class. It’s also the deadline to declare a major and minor for certain programs. Don’t know if this applies to you? Check with an advisor. And make sure you pay your tuition and fees on or before January 31!
