Our faculty are engaged in interesting and timely research across a number of fields and topics. Those faculty often act as experts for The Conversation Canada, where they can share that research with a wider audience. We then re-publish those articles on MacEwan.ca. This year, Lisa McCalder-Kendrick, associate professor in the Faculty of Nursing, penned MacEwan.ca’s most-read The Conversation article on the larger effects of nursing shortages.

We celebrated the achievements of some of our newest alumni ahead of their convocation ceremonies. Our student awards are presented to those who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, leadership and embodiment of the MacEwan spirit.

The announcement that MacEwan is preparing to host the largest community-based research conference in Canada in 2025 was big news. The Community-College-University Exposition (C2UExpo) brings researchers and practitioners together to showcase how campus-community partnerships are addressing local and global challenges.

Our Meet the Class stories are always among our most-read stories, and 2024 was no exception. We got to know some of our graduating students throughout the year, learning their unique stories, what motivated them in their studies and the people who helped them along the way.

Our campus is expanding! We broke ground on the new School of Business Building this spring, before the cranes set up shop north of SAMU. The building is slated to open in 2027, and will make space for 7,500 more MacEwan students.

Our 2023/24 book of the year was Bad Cree. We caught up with the author – and MacEwan alum – Jessica Johns, and she spoke about how she started writing, what inspired the novel and what she hopes people take away from it.

Over the course of the year, we presented seven incredible people with  honorary doctorates. In the spring, the honour went to Anne McLellan, Annemarie Leenhouts-Petrov, Dr. Austin Albert Mardon, Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai and Dr. Shane O’Dea. At our Fall Convocation, we presented honorary doctorates to James Mowat and Angus Watt.

Our alumni are making major impacts near and far. Each year, we celebrate some of those people with Distinguished Alumni and Emerging Leader Awards. This spring, Josh Languedoc and Mallory Yawnghwe received Distinguished Alumni Awards, and Andrew Dunn, Cheyenne Rain LeGrande and Reakash Walters received Emerging Leader Awards.
