When Alicia Slusarchuk, Bachelor of Communication Studies, was a student, you could find her volunteering her time to support all kinds of MacEwan initiatives. Today, she’s back on campus – adding MacEwan’s Alumni Advisory Council to the impressive list of ways she gives back to her community.
You say it’s the ubiquitous nature of communications that interests you most about your chosen field?
Whether it's signs, symbols, words or imagery, communications is at the heart of everything we do. I think the thing that fascinates me the most about it is how one word, even one comma, has the ability to change your message in its entirety. It's fascinating!
Do you have a favourite memory of your time as a student MacEwan Ambassador or leader in the MacEwan University Ukrainian Students Organization?
One of my favourite experiences was living in Portugal with students from different faculties while participating in the European Innovation Academy. During the week, we learned from Fortune 500 companies about starting business ventures, and on the weekends, we would travel to neighbouring cities taking in the beaches and history. Talk about an incredible opportunity!
Being an active member of the MacEwan community served me well. If I were to give a new student advice to maximize their experience, it would be to get involved. Through being curious and saying yes to different opportunities I gained many friendships, connections and life skills that I carried forward – everything from hosting an event and fundraising to budgeting and gaining stakeholder buy-in.
You’re currently a communications coordinator with the City of Edmonton. What do you enjoy about the work you’re doing now?
From festivals that happen year-round to a stunning river valley, there's a lot to appreciate about Edmonton. The best part of my job is seeing how teamwork creates positive change in our city.
Giving your time to organizations you care about is nothing new for you. Where and how do you spend your spare time?
When I’m not working, you’ll find me outdoors at the lake or mountains. I love sharing my time with organizations I’m passionate about, such as the Winspear Centre, Stollery Women’s Network, UFest Ukrainian Festival, International Association of Business Communicators, Edmonton Heritage Festival and Canadian Ski Patrol.
What inspired you to join the Alumni Advisory Council?
I had a great university experience and am honoured to be part of the Alumni Advisory Council. It helps me stay connected and active in our community. I love being able to give back to MacEwan and mentor future students as they break into industry.
Is there something interesting or cool from your time as a MacEwan student that others might remember too?
One of the best places to make memories at MacEwan is at Towers – good people, good vibes, amazing Caesars!
