Dr. Craig Earle, a nationally renowned expert in the field of cancer care in Canada, is the featured speaker in MacEwan’s next Chancellor Speaker Series. Dr. Earle will share his expertise and unique perspective on the future of cancer care at three events: a public lecture, Student Innovation Challenge and Thought Leader Dialogue panel on a topic he has built his career around: Shaping a Pan-Canadian Future for Cancer Care.

The Chancellor Speaker Series is aimed at generating progressive discussion around topics that align with MacEwan’s sitting chancellor’s interests, as well as the issues that affect the communities the university serves. When looking for someone to invite to speak this fall, inaugural Chancellor Dr. Anthony Fields, himself a leading figure in the field of oncology, chose Dr. Earle for his extensive experience in the field of cancer care and research.

“Dr. Earle has dedicated his career to helping Canadians face cancer with hope and determination,” says Dr. Fields. “His decades of experience in medicine and teaching have led him to the role of CEO of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, where he is a steadfast leader in providing access to quality health care and improving outcomes for patients. I look forward to hearing him discuss his thoughts and ideas about the future of cancer care across Canada.”

Dr. Earle joined the partnership in 2017, where he initially served as vice-president, Cancer Control. He is also a medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal oncology at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, a senior scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. He was also the former head of clinical translation at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and the director of the Health Services Research Program for Cancer Care Ontario.

In his public lecture on October 24, Dr. Earle will discuss the pan-Canadian approach to important priorities in cancer, including advancing prevention, screening and care, and improving outcomes consistent with the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control. He aims to focus on the need to establish organized lung-screening programs across the country, health equity, reconciliation and how improved data and modeling can support policy decisions, research and implementation.

On October 23, MacEwan faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the Thought Leader Dialogue which will take place on October 23 in the Feigel Conference Centre. Dr. Earle will be joined by several local experts to discuss some of the transformative approaches to cancer care that are being explored.

On October 24 at 1 p.m., join us to support student research and leadership at the Student Innovation Challenge in the Feigel Conference Centre. Students will present their innovative ideas that address current challenges in cancer care to a panel of judges – including Dr. Earle, Dr. Fields, and MacEwan President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Annette Trimbee – who will assess the presentations and award cash prizes to the winning teams.
