May’s cool, rainy weather is behind us, and we’re ready to celebrate summer! With National Indigenous History Month, Spring Convocation, Pride Month and more, there’s no shortage of things to do on and around campus this month.

National Indigenous History Month

June is a month to recognize the rich and storied history, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across the country. Here on campus, kihêw waciston is hosting a series of celebratory and educational events to mark the month.

Check out the diverse array of local First Nation, Métis, and Inuit artists at the Indigenous Artisan Market outside of kihêw waciston, between Building 9 and Allard Hall, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m on June 7.

JUNO Award-winning artist Aysanabee will be performing in the Triffo Theatre at 4 p.m. on June 16. Aysanabee draws inspiration for his music from growing up in Sandy Lake First Nation, and wrote his entire first album about his grandfather’s life experiences there. Get your tickets before they sell out!

Round out the month with a free screening of Wildhood on June 25 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room 6-214. The coming-of-age film focuses on a young man going on a journey to find his mother and connect with his Indigenous culture.

Pride Month

In addition to hosting our very own Pride Week on campus back in March, the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) is partnering with Edmonton organizations to host events celebrating the queer community here in the city for Pride Month.

On Saturday, June 8, head to campus for MacEwan Community Pride Day. Start off at the Pride Patio Party at Towers and enjoy queer entertainment from noon to 6 p.m.

From there, hop on a bus tour with the Edmonton Queer History Project. The bus leaves right from Towers to explore notable downtown locations that figure into the history of queer rights in Edmonton.

Batter up! The Edmonton Riverhawks are hosting their third-annual Pride Night on June 29. Catch drag performances and bid on a Riverhawks pride jersey to support CSGD while you cheer on the home team.

And throughout the month, make sure to walk through Allard Hall and catch the Len and Cub photo exhibition. The exhibition tells the story of a queer couple in New Brunswick in the early 20th century who had to keep their relationship secret, but documented their moments together in photographs.

Spring Convocation

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

If you’re graduating this spring, stop by campus for the Convocation Kickoff Fair on June 13 and 14, where you can pick up your cap and gown, participate in activities and get discounts from vendors including the MacEwan Bookstore.

Convocation ceremonies will be held at the Winspear Centre from June 18 to 20. On June 18, celebrate the Faculty of Arts and Science, the School of Continuing Education and the Faculty of Health and Community Studies.

The Faculty of Health and Community Studies convocation continues on June 19, along with the Faculty of Nursing.

On June 20, the ceremonies wrap up with the School of Business and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications.

Be sure to tune in to the webcast of the ceremonies to hear convocation addresses and watch our deserving grads receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates.

And that’s not all!

If you’re looking for even more to do this month, we’ve got plenty of other events lined up to indulge your artistic interests, keep you active and prepare you for the Fall term.

Check out AGREEMENT, the latest exhibition at the John and Maggie Mitchell Art Gallery. Amanda Dunsmore’s video portrait exhibition requires multiple visits to see in full – individual portraits are being screened for a week at a time until the exhibition wraps up in August. On June 19, be sure to attend a reception and talk with the artist herself.

Head off-campus to the Stanley A. Milner Library for A Narrative Inquiry into the Experiences of Children and Youth Waiting for Mental Health Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic. The series of public art exhibitions is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and was researched in part by MacEwan faculty members Dr. Margot Jackson and Dr. Kristopher Wells, and runs until June 29.

Getting Started: Understanding Academic Planning and Enrolment is a recurring webinar that runs every Tuesday this summer. Students can tune in to learn everything they need to know about requirements and regulations for programs, and the technical processes involved in enrolling, dropping and changing classes. Incoming international students can also attend the Initial Study Permit Q&A on June 13 to find out how to acquire their study permits for the Fall 2024 or Winter 2025 term. At the online drop-in sessions, students can ask a specialist any questions they may have about the process.

Get in the swing of golf season and support a great cause! The Gene Zwozdesky Memorial Charity Golf Classic – United for Ukraine tees off on June 21.

Looking for a way to extend your summer adventures? Attend an online Education Abroad Information Session on June 27 to learn about the locations you can travel to while earning your credentials.
