From live music to Mental Health Week to finding your summer job, there are dozens of events worth checking out on campus this month.

If you’re brand new to MacEwan, welcome! Check out New Student Orientation on January 2 to ensure you’re settled in and ready for your first day of classes on January 3.

January 4 marks the second-annual National Ribbon Skirt Day. Head to kihêw waciston and the John L. Haar Library to see ribbon skirt displays and learn more about what the skirts represent..

Money can be tight as a student, especially after the holidays. If you’re an international student, check out this January 8 virtual session on work permits and info session on work placements and practicums on January 16.

Whether you’re thinking about publishing or just enjoy listening to authors reading their novels, the Canadian Authors Series has something for you. The January 9 event features authors Deborah Willis and Sharon English as they read excerpts of their work and discuss writing, editing and publishing.

Maybe you’re thinking about publishing research instead of fiction. Attend a Demystifying Student Research Grants info session on January 10 or 11 to learn how to get funding.

Now that winter is in full swing, summer might feel like a dream but it’s the perfect time to start planning a study getaway. Education Abroad is hosting info sessions on January 10, 12 and 30 and a virtual session on January 24. If you’re still unsure if leaving Edmonton is the best option for you, attend the Winter Education Abroad Fair on January 31 to meet students who have returned from their own adventures abroad to share their experiences.

Taking a class that just isn’t the right fit? That’s okay! Change your schedule by the add/drop deadline on January 12 to get some money back and keep that course off your transcript.

Take a break from studying and indulge in a little live music. MacEwan’s Showcase Band and Country/Roots Concert is on January 13. If classical is more your jam, check out the Garneau String Quartet Concert on January 15. Third-year composition majors in the music program will present their original music at the Composition Concert on January 27. Round out the month with the Conservatory Big Band and Jazz Combo Concert on January 28. Students also receive ticket discounts for almost all music performances.

Commerce or arts and cultural management students can attend an info session for an internship in Lisbon, Portugal on January 17. Arts and cultural management students can also check out a similar opportunity in Prague, Czech Republic, along with communications students on January 23.

If you’re sober (or are curious about getting sober), attend the monthly Recovery on Campus meeting to find support with like-minded peers.

On January 24, Dr. Olesya Khromeychuk – historian, writer and director of the Ukrainian Institute in London, England – will present a talk on the Russo-Ukraine War to discuss the ongoing conflict and its relevance globally.

The 2024 Interdisciplinary Dialogue: Cities of Tomorrow kicks off on January 30 with ahkamêyimok: Stories of Hope. The event features Edmonton city councillor, Indigenous artist and author Aaron Paquette, along with Indigenous educator Clarice Anderson who will share their stories and guide participants in creating a collective art project.

Know someone who’s creative? Make sure to tell them about Design Student for a Day on January 31.

It might still be the middle of winter, but it’s never too early to start looking at summer jobs. Check out the Summer Career Fair on January 31 to meet professionals from different industries, get advice and even apply for work.

The last day of the month is also the tuition and fee deadline for the Winter 2024 term.

Mental Health Week 2024

January 22 to 26 is MacEwan’s Mental Health Week: Finding Harmony. On Monday, January 22, attend the week’s opening ceremony with Indigenous Knowledge Keeper George Desjarlais, then join the Peer Health Education Team and the MacEwan Anti-Violence Education Network (MAVEN) for painting, swag and resources at the self-care station.

Check out the Community Mental Health Resources Fair on January 23. Staff and faculty can also learn about mental health and well-being essentials.

On January 24, learn the warning signs of suicide with safeTalk. Then join fellow MacEwan students as they host a panel discussion about Finding Harmony in Your Mental Health. Staff and faculty can learn how to identify and assist students in distress.

And wrap things up with the Campus Resource Fair on January 25.
