The campus is buzzing this Fall term, and just like the leaves, the events are piling up! Make sure to take advantage of the many opportunities to learn, celebrate and come together during October.

For the entirety of Islamic Heritage Month, The Canadian Prayer Rug – a project highlighting the intersectionality of Alberta history and Muslim heritage on Treaty 6, will be on display on the second floor of the Library. Keep an eye on MacEwan.ca/Events for a series of events in recognition of Islamic Heritage Month, including an event focused on supporting survivors of hate crimes

From October 2 to 6, participate in a Week of Action to end sexual violence. The MAVEN Peer Education team will host Peace Together: The Art of Resilience, a gallery space in the SAMU Building for individuals impacted by sexual violence, their supporters and allies to display their artistic creations. Throughout the week, take in sessions on gender-based violence in the sciences, the teachings of Indigenous matriarchy and crafting to honour them, breaking down restrictive ideas around masculinity, a drop-in self-care space and a bystander intervention workshop. On October 3, the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) will mark its first year with a birthday party. It’s never too early to start thinking about what comes next. If you’re considering taking your education on the road, stop by MacEwan.ca/EducationAbroad for information on one of their weekly information sessions. If convocation is around the corner, you’ll want to visit MacEwan.ca/MyCareer for details on their in-person Graduate School Fair on October 4 and mark your calendar for the Fall Career Fair on October 5 (Careers and Experience also has some great tips on how to make a great impression when you attend).

On October 4, we’ll be celebrating Canadian authors with the second annual Monica Miller Memorial Lecture, which will feature Suzette Mayr

After the Thanksgiving long weekend (most university buildings and services will be closed on October 9, but the Library and Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness are open with holiday hours), the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre is hosting two events. On October 11, visiting scholar Dr. Yulia Krylova-Grek will discuss Russian media in the context of the war in Ukraine and October 13 will be the premiere screening of Myrna Kostash: Here, a short documentary that celebrates the renowned creative non-fiction author's extensive career.

If you’re a business student (anyone majoring in or minoring in a program from the School of Business), don’t forget to sign up for the Business Student Conference on October 13.

There are great events happening across campus in October – a sign that this place is busy and thriving. Take some time on October 19 to join President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Annette Trimbee for Powered by Place: State of the University Address in the Betty Andrews Recital Hall.

One place we haven’t mentioned yet is the Triffo Theatre. Do you have your tickets for the first theatre show of the year? The Department of Theatre’s 2023/24 season opens in early November with the cheekily named production [title of show], but tickets are on sale now for all four shows.
