The first snow is behind us, and a whole lot of events are ahead of us this month. Grab your calendar and get ready for a November filled with engaging events!
With the semester – and group projects – at full steam, what better time to celebrate the joy of collaboration with the Department of Theatre’s production of [title of show]?
From November 1 to 5, MacEwan’s Musical Theatre Performance and Theatre Production majors will stage their first show of the 2023/24 season. Take in a show and follow along with four friends on their journey through the gauntlet of creative self-expression.
Across the Allard Hall atrium, the MacEwan Global Music Series is kicking off on November 1 with a free concert featuring Afro-Cuban, Latin, folklore and jazz music with Israel “Toto” Berriel and Montuno West.
Know someone who’s thinking about beginning their post-secondary journey? Invite them to MacEwan’s annual Open House on November 4. There will be campus tours, information sessions and a peek at everything university life has to offer.
On November 6, the MAVEN Peer Education team is hosting a conversation about challenging sexual cyberviolence and creating safe online spaces with Mission: Unlocking Online Consent. Later the same day, take in a screening of the Canadian documentary Boys Will Be … Themselves, followed by a facilitated conversation for Men’s Mental Health Month.
If you’re looking to spice up your own university experience, stop by one of the Education Abroad Info Sessions on November 8 or 21. It’s never too early to start planning a summer, term or year abroad.
Addressing issues closer to home is the topic of the Chancellor Speaker Series on November 8. Throughout the day, three events will focus on health equity. Students will share their ideas on how to ensure equity for some of our most vulnerable community members at the Student Innovation Challenge Poster Presentation (teams can win up to $700! – see how to make a submission and act fast – the deadline is Oct. 31). Later that afternoon, check out the top five teams at the Student Innovation Challenge Live Pitch. A few hours after he helps select the top team, Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull (pictured above), co-founder and medical director of Ottawa Inner City Health Inc. will take the stage to share his efforts to address the ways in which our health-care system doesn’t work for people experiencing homelessness.
That same day, Wellness and Psychological Services, CHARM and SAMU are hosting Recovery on Campus, a monthly gathering and safe space for students who are sober and sober curious.
On November 13, campus will be closed to observe Remembrance Day. Although there are no classes, campus is still open over the Fall Reading Break from November 14 through 17.
Fall Convocation is November 14 at the Winspear Centre. Webcasts of the ceremonies will be available to watch on the MacEwan website. Congratulations to those graduating and heading off into the next steps of their careers!
If you haven’t already visited the current exhibition in the Mitchell Art Gallery, now’s the time. Benjamin Oswold will talk about the development of his practice at an Artist Talk on November 10. The exhibition is on until December 9, so make sure to stop by!
The Garneau String Quartet Concert is on November 27 in Muttart Hall at the Alberta College Campus.
Finish off the month the way it started – in the theatre! On November 29, our students take to the stage again with Legally Blonde: The Musical. Tickets are on sale now, and the final day to catch the show is December 3.
