Inez Agovic is one of the newest alumni to join MacEwan University’s Alumni Advisory Council (AAC).

Agovic majored in International Business and graduated from the Bachelor of Commerce program in 2015. While on campus, she was a MacEwan Ambassador and volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club. Following her graduation, she went on to pursue her passion of studying law. She is now a lawyer with Thompson, Laboucan & Epp LLP, where she practices in litigation, employment, and Indigenous rights.

We caught up with her to talk about her biggest accomplishments, some of her favourite memories of MacEwan and her goals for her new position with the AAC.

What would you say has been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement so far is becoming a lawyer, which was a goal of mine for many years. After I graduated from MacEwan University, I attended law school at the University of Alberta. I articled for a year and then was called to the Bar in July 2020. I currently practice law at a boutique firm that specializes in protecting and advocating for the rights of Indigenous and Métis peoples. I love the work that I do and that I am able to help people in a meaningful way.

What is your most vivid MacEwan memory?

It's so hard to pick just one! Some of my most memorable moments include meeting some of my close friends (like randomly sitting next to a girl on the first day of Business Law who ended up being a lifelong friend). Another is Business 450, where we essentially got to compete against other teams for the best business through an online platform. I don't remember another class project where I had that much fun and learned so much at the same time.

Is there a faculty or staff member at MacEwan that made an impact on you, during your time at MacEwan?

The staff and professors at MacEwan were all excellent. I really enjoyed the classes where professors encouraged students to voice their opinions and share ideas. The small class sizes really helped me get to know professors and be more comfortable with speaking up in class. Some of the staff at MacEwan that really left a positive impact on me were Frank Saccucci, Victor Bilodeau and Gordon Lucyk – their lectures were always engaging and they were kind, approachable, patient and truly cared about students.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my friends, family, husband and cats. I love to travel, play board games, and listen to music, especially Taylor Swift.

What was it about your experience at MacEwan that inspired you to join the AAC?

I had the best time attending MacEwan University and I really wanted to join the AAC to give back to a school that gave so much to me. I wanted to reconnect with the MacEwan community and the AAC felt like the perfect way to do that.

What do you hope to accomplish as a member of the AAC?

I hope that through the AAC I get to reconnect and give back in a meaningful way. I would like to help other alumni get reconnected with MacEwan and contribute to new developments, such as the new School of Business building, which is really exciting for both the school and downtown Edmonton.
