Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, has announced new appointments to the Order of Canada. Among them is Dr. Sarah Carter, who received an honorary doctorate from MacEwan University in 2022.
“On behalf of the entire MacEwan community, I’m pleased to offer congratulations to Dr. Carter on this honour,’’ said Dr. Annette Trimbee, president and vice-chancellor of MacEwan University. “Her career as an educator, author and scholar has helped shape our collective understanding of our past – particularly as it relates to the impact and importance of women and Indigenous people in the building of this country. We are proud to count Dr. Carter among MacEwan’s honorary doctorate recipients.”
Carter is a professor in the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and, in 2020, received the Canada Council Killam Prize for outstanding achievements within the field of humanities. Her published works include a 2016 book, Imperial Plots: Women, Land, and the Spadework of British Colonialism on the Canadian Prairie, which received several prizes, including the Governor General’s History Award for Scholarly Research. Carter has served as editor of the Canadian Historical Review, co-editor of the McGill-Queen’s Press Indigenous and Northern Series, and expert witness for several First Nations’ treaty land and economic entitlement claims.
The Order of Canada is one of Canada’s highest honours. Created in 1967, it recognizes people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to our nation.
“Today, we recognize individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society,” said Simon. “A group of individuals who, through dedication and ajuinnata – perseverance – make our communities and our country better every day.”
