Congratulations to the Class of 2023! Over the past week, members of the MacEwan community came together to celebrate the university’s newest alumni. Here are some of the highlights.
Every one of our almost 2,200 grads has a story to tell, and we tried to capture as many as possible in our Meet the Class of 2023 series. Read about the successes, challenges, friendships and future hopes of our graduates in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Health and Community Studies, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, the School of Business and the School of Continuing Education.
Celebrating excellence was a mainstay in each of the six ceremonies. We presented Lorne Gladu, founding CEO of the Rupertsland Institute Métis Centre of Excellence, with an honorary doctorate.
Dr. Anthony Fields, MacEwan’s chancellor, presents Lorne Gladu with an honorary doctorate.
We listened to reflections and good wishes from Shannon Majeau and Lisa Kotelniski, recipients of the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence and Student Leadership. We also recognized 12 additional high-achieving students with Governor General and Dean’s medals.
Lisa Kotelniski speaks to Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications graduates at the June 21 ceremony.
We honoured the 2023 Teaching Awards recipients and 2023 Distinguished Research Award recipient Dr. Kevin Judge. Watch Dr. Judge receive his award and address the Class of 2023 during the Faculty of Arts and Science convocation ceremony on June 20.
And we heard inspiring words from Distinguished Alumni Award recipients Dave Babcock, Adine Shuchuk and Travis Switzer.
Ray Baril leads the MacEwan Big Band at Spring Convocation.
Convocation just wouldn’t be the same without music. As always, the MacEwan University Big Band provided a soundtrack for the event. They also bid a fond farewell to the band’s retiring director Ray Baril, who is stepping down after 37 years at the podium.
Brianna Lizotte, a Métis fiddle player graduating with a Bachelor of Music, played in each ceremony accompanied by guitarist Justin Smith, BMus ’22. And Daphne Alexis, a Knowledge Keeper with the university’s kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre, performed honour songs for each group of graduates with Arnold Alexis and the Little Boy Singers.

Our Spring Convocation graduates also received a gift from MacEwan University’s Alumni Association – a print of “Our Pursuit of Knowledge Can Lead Us Down Many Paths” by Elena Mercuri, a third-year Bachelor of Fine Arts student majoring in Studio Arts. She explained the inspiration for the painting on the university’s Instagram page.
