Students in Dr. Lynne Honey’s PSYC 381: Animal Learning Field School spent a week observing expert animal trainers at Discovery Wildlife Park in Innisfail. Working closely with wolves and grizzly bears, they learned about classical and operant conditioning (including training this grizzly bear to touch its head), environmental enrichment and health and wellness requirements for animals living in captivity.

As part of Red Dress Day on May 5, an annual day of awareness, kihêw waciston honoured Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) with an installation at locations across campus.

This year, the university’s Hospitality Services department sold 28 kegs of Griffins Beer (made with honey from MacEwan’s bees) at Towers Pub and Griffins home games, raising more than $2,000 to support student awards. The team also joined forces with SAMU and Aramark to donate over 700 items to the SAMU Pantry between December and April, with plans to continue the food security program over the summer.

On May 4 and 5, Early Learning at MacEwan invited community partners and families to help celebrate the centre’s 50th anniversary.

On May 23 and 24, the Centre for Teaching and Learning hosted a teaching symposium that looked at navigating the evolving frontiers of higher education.” Participants from northern post-secondary institutions, including MacEwan, Norquest College, NAIT, Northwest Polytechnic and Keyano College explored opportunities presented by intercultural encounters, immersive learning and artificial intelligence.

MacEwan faculty and staff from the School of Social Work and MacEwan International welcomed Dr. Barbara Wedler and Gabriela Beyer (pictured at centre), partners from the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida. Since 2019, MacEwan Bachelor of Social Work students have travelled to Germany to complete their fourth-year practicum and students from Mittweida come to MacEwan to take social work courses.
