Things are usually a bit quieter on campus in the summer, but this June is poised to be an exception to that rule. Grab your phone and get ready to add these exciting (and mostly free!) events to your calendar.

On June 2, we’re celebrating a semester of incredible learning with Ben Calf Robe School students, the first-ever participants in a pilot project called MacEwanCYU (child and youth university). The entire university community is welcome to stop by the Robbins Health Learning Centre anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. on June 2 to participate in some awesome hands-on activities (DNA necklaces, anyone?) and help us show these students how proud we are of all they have learned.

Throughout the month and leading up to National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, kihêw waciston, MacEwan’s Indigenous Centre, is celebrating with music, art, land-based activities and teachings.

On June 8, join kihêw waciston, the MacEwan Library, the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity, and the Faculty of Nursing’s Bear Healing Lodge for a screening of ROSIE. Everyone is welcome to watch this feature film debut by Métis writer-director-actor Gail Maurice, which tells the story of a young, orphaned, Indigenous girl forced to live with her reluctant, street-smart Aunty Fred (Frédérique). Shift from film to music and join artists from across North America – Spur Pourier, Gunner Jules, Sebastian Gaskin, Tammy Rae and more – at the Indigenous Music Showcase on June 10. Tickets are free and seats are first-come, first-served. Arrive early!

Plan to head outdoors between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 14 to learn about hide tanning from Les Skinner, a Métis bushman and MacEwan’s nêhiyawêwin teacher. Les will be outside kihêw waciston for the whole day, ready to engage in conversations about food sovereignty and land, language, and community-based teaching and learning in a good way.

During the June 21 Spring Convocation ceremony (our celebrations run from June 20 to 22), we will also be marking National Indigenous Peoples Day. Watch the live feed at MacEwan.ca/Convocation

If you didn’t already put ROSIE in your calendar, then do it now because, in addition to helping kick off a month of celebrating Indigenous culture, the film screening also marks the beginning of our Pride Month celebrations.

We got a head start on Pride Month when we freshened up our rainbow sidewalks in late May. Take a stroll across one and then keep walking with an Edmonton Queer History Project Walking Tour – a range of events run from May through August.

On June 10, we’re teaming up with YEG Art + Feminism and the Edmonton Queer History Project for an in-person Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Head to Roundhouse in Allard Hall to help make Edmonton’s queer history more visible and accessible on Wikipedia. After you’ve made your mark online, then make your way to Towers Pub for (we hope) a perfect almost-summer patio party with music, food, drinks – and drag bingo. Watch MacEwan.ca/Events for details.

Up for something sports-y? We’re thrilled to be sponsoring the Riverhawks Strike Out Hate/Pride in the Park game on June 17 at 7:05 p.m. Grab your tickets (and a jersey!) at the MacEwan Bookstore. More details to come at MacEwan.ca/Events. If you want to make your Saturday extra-athletic, grab three friends (all genders welcome) for a day of beach volleyball. Sport and Wellness invites you to hit the sand with a four-on-four tournament from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

And if you find yourself a little sad about your lack of international travel this summer, log into the online Education Abroad Information Session on June 27 and plan to head out into the world!

Have a great June, everyone!
