Abhijeet Singh is a busy guy. The legal studies major maintains a spot on the Dean’s list, is the secretary-general of the United Nations Club, vice-president of the Law Club and vice-president of the Debate Club, which he also co-founded.
On top of those accomplishments, he’s also a recipient of the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC)’s Top 30 Under 30 Award. The awards are distributed annually to individuals who are working to make the world a more sustainable and fair place. This year’s recipients were chosen based on their alignment with the theme “Reduced Inequalities,” one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
“As an aspiring lawyer, I am motivated to reduce inequities because I believe in fairness and justice,” says Singh. “Everybody should have equal possibilities and opportunities to flourish and thrive in a more equitable and inclusive society.”
Singh credits the United Nations Club with growing his interest in global education, and inspiring him to pursue ways to help. He turned that inspiration into action and volunteered in Cusco, Peru in August 2022 to teach English. He hopes that his actions will motivate others to undertake similar ventures.
The club also gave him the opportunity to speak in New York City about his working paper in the United Nations Development Programme, which dealt with sustainable recovery from COVID-19 as well as sustainable development in the Anthropocene.
Singh was nominated for the Top 30 Under 30 Award by two of his professors, Dr. L. Daniel Wilson and Dr. Chaldeans Mensah, whom he says were instrumental to his success in his time at MacEwan.
“They’ve been extremely selfless and kind throughout my time here,” says Singh. “They didn’t just make me a better academic student, but they also helped with my personal growth.”
