This year has been a milestone for MacEwan University. We marked our 50th anniversary, made strides in student opportunities and celebrated our graduates and alumni. Read some of our biggest stories that reflect those major moments.

Announcing the 2022 alumni award recipients

In June, we announced this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipients: Rob Cyrynowski, Vivian Giang, Keith King, Scott McKeen, Dean McNeill and Angela Merriott. For the first time, we also awarded the Emerging Leader Award to two recipients: Mackenzie Brown and Alexander Fanni. The chosen recipients were honoured at a ceremony during MacEwan’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Free English classes help Ukrainian newcomers learn the language and find community

MacEwan’s Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre partnered with the School of Continuing Education and members of Edmonton’s Ukrainian community to help new arrivals from Ukraine to learn English as a second language. The classes were available free of charge, and were launched as a stopgap until government-funded classes were made available for incoming Ukrainian refugees.

New digital learning environment

MacEwan replaced its Blackboard learning system with paskwâwi-mostos mêskanâs, which went live for use in the Fall 2022 term. Ahead of its launch, we discussed how to navigate the platform, and how to respectfully use its name.

We named seven new honorary doctorate recipients this year. In the spring, there were five recipients: Mary Cameron, Dr. Sarah Carter, Susan Green, Doug Stollery and Dr. D. Lorne Tyrell. In the fall, Jackie Rae Greening and Maria Ressa received the honour as well.

Meet the class of 2022

We saw thousands of accomplished grads cross the stage in 2022. We spoke to new alumni from the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, the Faculty of Health and Community Studies, the Faculty of Nursing and the School of Continuing Education, and the School of Business who participated in Spring Convocation.

Three new micro-credentials are just the beginning

After a successful pilot, three micro-credential programs were announced at the School of Continuing Education. The programs are available in intelligent supply chain, sustainable business and digital marketing for small businesses, and open the doors for similar courses to be offered in the future.

As MacEwan marked half a century as an institution, we looked back at some of our past achievements. We celebrated our history of teaching greatness and our impressive research and creative activity.

Partnership with Alberta Health Services lets nursing students earn while they learn

A partnership between MacEwan and Alberta Health Services helped to address both nursing shortages and learning requirements. Students were able to accept paid positions for preceptorship placements, which is unusual in North America.

Seven MacEwan alumni make Edify magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 list

Each year, Edify magazine highlights 40 young Edmontonians making a name for themselves in and around the city. Seven of our alumni made the list this year: James Grant, Bailey Oster, Jenna Pryor, Matthew Schur, Laurie Wang, Justin Yaassoub and Mallory Yawnghwe. We can’t wait to see what these trailblazers accomplish next in their careers.
