Currently in her final semester of the Bachelor of Science program, Hazal Ates was delighted to find out that she received a scholarship from the Alberta Women's Science Network (AWSN).
"Receiving this scholarship has not only contributed greatly to my financial needs but has also acknowledged my determination and efforts throughout my degree," says Ates, who is majoring in chemistry and minoring in biological sciences. "I feel incredibly privileged to be in a position where I can pursue my academic goals and have the support of my family, friends and organizations like the Alberta Women’s Science Network.
AWSN connects, unites, supports and promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs throughout the province.
In her time at MacEwan, Ates has worked with Dr. Roland Lee on the development and expansion of sustainable green chemistry. Her research focused on conducting environmentally conscious chemical reactions by using switchable hydrophilic solvents (SHS) as recyclable catalysts and solvents.
"Chemistry is an incredibly diverse field that requires a high level of problem-solving and critical thinking," says Ates. "I enjoy a hands-on environment, and chemistry has allowed me to apply what I learn in the classroom to the real world. Through the interdisciplinary nature of chemistry, I have never felt limited to one area of study which encourages innovation and promotes personal growth.”
She credits Dr. Samuel Mugo with helping her secure an internship as a quality control analyst at one of Canada’s privately owned medical device companies, where she was responsible for synthesizing silver-based, wound-care patent technology aimed to prevent infection and disease.
Ates says both the internship and her research experience at MacEwan taught her about the power and importance of research. After graduation, she plans to continue her education in fields related to human health.
"Providing service for others directly or indirectly is my main priority, and I hope to seek opportunities that value my ideas and allow me to reach my fullest potential," she says.
