Perhaps no one spends as much time on campus as theatre students. They work from early in the morning to late at night to craft and build costumes, sets, props, lighting and more for theatre season shows and for in-class assignments.
So when an email went out to students interested in taking on a placemaking project as part of the AGAD 300 practicum course, second-year Theatre Production student Snow White saw an opportunity to practice her skills, exercise her creative freedom and make her campus more like a home away from home.
The project, to design and install a Little Library on the second floor of Allard Hall, was developed as a means to create a more relaxed, user-friendly space.
"The Little Library is a less academic-focused space for students to use for relaxing and recuperating, especially for those who cannot go home between classes," says Snow.
The experience was a chance for Snow to see a project through from start to finish, using her own resources and skills (including carpentry and drafting for the construction of a bookcase and communications to express her needs for the project).
The Little Library is open to all until December 11, but Snow hopes its users will ensure it stays up for even longer.
"Feel free to take a book or donate one and just use the space," says Snow. "If it's well received, it could stay year round."
