Megan Heximer had never really considered making research part of her social work education until she began her second-year social work practicum with Dr. Rita Dhungel.
Leading a team of student researchers from MacEwan and the University of Calgary, Heximer helped Dr. Dhungel with a project that looked at the experiences of immigrants and refugees living with HIV in Alberta.
Working alongside Dr. Dhungel, Heximer conducted literature reviews, wrote grant and ethics proposals, helped with group facilitation, and oversaw the project’s budget and timeline. She was also the contact person for the project’s community partner, HIV Edmonton.
“The opportunity to work with scholars, students and professionals from different universities, organizations and backgrounds was so valuable,” says the third-year student Bachelor of Social Work. “Over the past year, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of clients’ needs and the importance of using a client-centred approach that takes into account their voices. This experience also showed me the value of research and how social work, as a profession, can use research to assess needs and gaps in services.”
Their research findings are part of a photovoice exhibit in the John L. Haar Library from December 1 to 8.
