At kihêw waciston, we undertake a variety of educational projects and initiatives that enhance awareness and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories and issues.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

kihêw waciston partnered with Edmonton Public Schools, the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Public Library, Edmonton Catholic Schools and Yellowhead Tribal College to produce a series of video resources available on the City of Edmonton’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation website, under the heading “Truth Telling and Teachings.”
National Day for Truth & Reconciliation
Dr. Lillian Gadwa-Crier, assistant professor in the Faculty of Arts and Science, discusses Indian Residential Schools and their continued impact on Indigenous Peoples in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Shelby LaFramboise, an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts, holds a cross-appointment between the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications and the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre. For the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, she shared her resource list of “story starters” for classroom use.
- Traditional Indigenous counselling services through the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre.
- Students can access services at Wellness and Psychological Services.
- Employees seeking counselling should access the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).
- National support services are available to survivors and their families through the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program. A National Indian Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support for former residential school students. The 24-hour line can be reached at 1-866-925-4419.
Speaking Truth – Uniting Music Artists from Across Borders
On September 29, 2021, kihêw waciston partnered with the University of Alberta’s First Peoples’ House to engage with Indigenous artists to present an evening of music and healing in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Artists included: Antoine Edwards Jr., Fawn Wood, Nataanii Means, Cree Confederation Drum Group, and special guest, Niska Napoleon.
