Childhood, Youth and Family Studies Minor

OUT-OF-FACULTY MINOR | BACHELOR OF ARTS | BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

Families are diverse—and family dynamics are complex. If you are seeking a deeper understanding of the relationships that shape families or are interested in working with these groups, this minor is for you.

Become familiar with the complex systems influencing today’s children, youth and families. Acquire the skills and knowledge to foster stronger relationships between children, youth, their guardians and the greater community. In this minor, you learn to make a positive impact where it matters most.

This minor is a strong complement to majors in sociology, psychology and anthropology.

What to expect

Led by faculty who are experts in their fields, you are introduced to holistic human development, relationships and early childhood education. This multidisciplinary minor draws on insights from psychology, sociology and education. Through assignments that focus on real-world situations, you learn to integrate theory with practice.

In required courses, you learn theories of families and family dynamics and explore historical and contemporary views of childhood and youth, including the social, cultural and economic factors that affect their well-being. You also choose from a number of interdisciplinary courses that cover topics such as social justice, mental health, law and social services. Throughout this minor, you learn about different ways of caring for children and youth, ethical decision-making when working with individuals and families, and various assessment and intervention methods.
