My approach to teaching music focuses, first and foremost, on the particular student's learning needs. I strive to maintain a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment, while endeavouring to make the activities and written work enjoyable for the student.

About

Dr. Robert Klakowich has held teaching positions at the University of Alberta, the University of Lethbridge, Durham University (UK) and the University of Auckland (New Zealand). Today, Robert pursues a teaching specialty in theory and musicianship here at the Conservatory of Music.

As a musicologist, he has prepared editions of English harpsichord music published by A-R Editions and Musica Britannica, has written numerous articles in scholarly journals, and has given papers and chaired sessions at national and international conferences. His interests in the performing arts extend from early music to musical theatre, but his real passion is teaching.

Lessons

Robert teaches all theoretical subjects from beginner to advanced levels, and can help prepare learners pursuing Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada and Associated Board theoretical and ear training requirements, university course preparation, or those wishing to study music theory for enjoyment.

Lessons take place in-person only at the Alberta College Campus weekday afternoons and evenings, for ages 5 to adult.

He offers private and semi-private lessons in:

  • Music Rudiments (RCM Levels 1-8 Theory)
  • Basic and Intermediate Harmony (RCM Levels 9 and 10 Harmony and Counterpoint)
  • Advanced Harmony (ARCT Harmony and Counterpoint)
  • Music Analysis (ARCT Analysis)
  • Music History (RCM Levels 9, 10 and ARCT)
  • Ear Training
