Transformative, collaborative, supportive. Those qualities provide the foundation for the School of Social Work. They are also at the heart of what social workers do when they work with families, provide support and transform lives in the communities where they live and work.
In partnership with social service agencies and organizations, the School of Social Work prepares students to be competent professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to practice in social work settings. Engaging in introductory and advanced field education experiences in social service agencies, they receive mentorship and supervision as they learn to integrate theory and practice, develop skills, examine values and ethics and establish a sense of professional social work identity.
Who we are
Social workers are registered professionals, provincially with the Alberta College of Social Work and nationally with the Canadian Association of Social Workers, who follow a code of ethics and adhere to standards of professional practice. We respond to human problems at individual, family and societal levels. We are open-minded, empathetic, tolerant and committed to building strong communities.
Where to start—diploma or degree?
MacEwan offers the following social work programs:
- 2-year diploma
and - Years 3 and 4 of a bachelor’s degree.
Apply to the one that is right for you.
Diploma start
If you have fewer than 60 university-level credits in social work, apply to the Social Work diploma (you'll start in the first year of the diploma program).
Degree start
If you have completed 60 university-level credits in social work, apply to the the Bachelor of Social Work university credit transfer route (you'll start in the third year of the degree).
Degree start
If you have a social work diploma from MacEwan or another Alberta school, apply to the Bachelor of Social Work post-diploma route (you'll start in the third year of the degree).
