TIME CAPSULE

100th anniversary time capsule.

As part of MacEwan's 50th anniversary celebrations, the university and SAMU (Students’ Association of MacEwan University) invited students, faculty and staff to contribute to the creation of a new time capsule.

These items reflect what was happening on campus and the world around us during our 50th year, and our hopes for the future.

This new time capsule will be filled and sealed this Fall and is scheduled to be opened on MacEwan’s 100th anniversary in 2071.

On November 21, the MacEwan Griffins women’s soccer team defeated Trinity Western 3-2 to capture the first U SPORTS national championship in program history. This was MacEwan’s first national championship since the university joined U SPORTS in 2014.

September 30, 2021 was the first officially recognized National Day of Truth and Reconciliation across Turtle Island. The same day is also recognized as Orange Shirt Day. This year, the university's t-shirt to mark the day was the first to honour a child's design. The artist is Amaya Suntjens (eight years old), whose Mosum survived Blue Quills Indian Residential School.

The MacEwan student ID and Library card is a gateway to over 200,000 print and one million electronic resources. "What will that card look like in 2071? Will plastic ID cards still exist?"

50th Anniversary Time Capsule

In 1993, the Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) assembled a time capsule and sealed it within Building 6, with instructions to open it during MacEwan’s 50th anniversary.

These contents offer a snapshot of campus life at that time, pay tribute to the institution’s roots and reveal a story of growth that continues today.

Roy Leadbeatter, an Edmonton sculptor, was commissioned by the GMCC Board of Governors in 1993 to prepare this artwork for presentation to retiring public board members with three or more years of service. The sculpture depicts the towers of the City Centre Campus.

The MacEwan family coat of arms contains the Griffin – a mythological creature with the body of a lion and a head of an eagle – considered to bring good luck. This Griffin is one of a limited series and the first Griffin was presented to our namesake, Dr. Grant MacEwan, on MacEwan Day, February 11, 1991.

Grant MacEwan Community College Students' Association (now the Students' Association of MacEwan University) contributed several items to the time capsule, including student handbooks, a yearbook, a copy of the GMCCSA newspaper and the Fox 40 whistle that was given out at new student orientation.
