MacEwan University participates actively in managing the university, from formal governing bodies to vibrant leadership organizations across campus.
Governing bodies
The authority to operate as a public post-secondary institution and an undergraduate university is granted to Grant MacEwan University through the Post-secondary Learning Act (PSLA). The university operates under a shared governance structure between the Board of Governors (Board) and the General Faculties Council (GFC).
The university's culture is reflected in shared governance, which includes considerable engagement and respect for a variety of viewpoints. The trademarks of university decision-making are collaboration, consultation, and cooperation. Under bicameral governance, the Board has senior oversight of the institution and concerns itself with long-range planning and business affairs. General Faculties Council is responsible for the academic affairs of the University.
The Office of University Governance at MacEwan houses the operations of the Board of Governors and the General Faculties Council, and is responsible for the effective operation and administration of the university’s governance structure.
Board of Governors
The Board of Governors oversees the management and operation of the university’s business and affairs. The Board manages and operates the University within its approved mandate, oversees the efficient and effective use of financial and human resources to meet institutional objectives and ensures that institutional risk is appropriately managed.
General Faculties Council
The General Faculties Council (GFC) is MacEwan University’s senior academic governance body. The GFC is responsible for the academic affairs of the university such as academic programming and curriculum, academic standards, research and creative activities, academic policies and awards.

President and Vice-Chancellor
The President serves as MacEwan University’s chief executive officer and Vice-Chancellor. The President provides the University with strategic leadership and oversight, works to develop and drive our mission, strategies and advancement, and report to the Board of Governors.

Chancellor
The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of MacEwan University and represents the public interest in the University.
The Chancellor represents the University at ceremonial occasions, presiding over all degree-conferring ceremonies and conferring said degrees. The Chancellor also serves as an advisor and support to the President and Vice-Chancellor and is an ex-officio member of MacEwan’s Board of Governors.
