HEALTH, SAFETY and ENVIRONMENT

Inspections

At MacEwan, a number of areas require regularly scheduled inspections by operational employees, managers, supervisory employees and/or Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committees.

Inspections can include, but are not limited to, the following areas: laboratory, office, shop.

An inspection is a systematic evaluation or examination of an operation, activity or work site that checks or tests against established standards, identifies hazards and recommends corrective actions.

The frequency of inspections depends on potential hazards. The following timelines are recommended.

High hazard: quarterly

  • mechanical room
  • chemical dispensing areas
  • commercial kitchen
  • retail
  • pool
  • theatre
  • workshop
  • shipping & receiving
  • custodial areas

Medium hazard: twice a year

  • laboratory
  • storage rooms
  • retail stores
  • parkade

Low hazard: annually

  • general office
  • classrooms
  • reception
  • conference rooms

Based on legislation that defines work site inspection requirements, an operational employee, manager, supervisor or Joint Worksite Health & Safety Committee may initiate an inspection. Regardless of who leads the inspection, active participation by employees working in the area is essential.

Active participation allows for:

  • Those who are inspecting to ask questions related to potential hazards and practical solutions
  • Those who are most familiar with the area and tasks to teach and explain

Documenting an inspection creates a working document that captures positive items and identifies areas for improvement. This document can be shared and referred to in a continual improvement process.

Concerns

If you have a concern related to a biological, chemical, physical or psychological hazard, such as a pool of water in a hallway, an unidentified spill in a laboratory or a dislodged fire extinguisher, it is important to report it before an incident can occur.

If you are an employee, discuss your concern with your immediate supervisor and then report it using the Employee Health and Safety Concern Report form. If the issue cannot be resolved by your immediate manager/supervisor, they will forward the completed form to the area’s Joint Work Site Health and Safety Committee (JWHSC) for resolution.

If you are a student, report to Security Service’s non-emergency line by calling 780-497-5554.
