Fire Safety

The Fire Safety Program at MacEwan aims to provide a safe environment through fire prevention and fire protection systems. These goals are accomplished through fire prevention education, fire extinguisher training, and fire and life safety inspections and testing.

Fire extinguisher training and guidelines

Fire extinguishers are appropriate for small fires (no bigger than a wastepaper basket). Portable extinguishers are not designed to fight large or spreading fires.

Remember that you are never required to put a fire out, but if you do attempt to extinguish a fire then you need to know when and how to use a fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers are valuable safety devices only when you know how to use them.

Fire extinguisher training

The Office of Health, Safety and Environment offers fire extinguisher training that consists of an online course and a hands-on training session. While anyone at MacEwan can take this free training, it is ideal for the following:

  • Security Services personnel
  • Facilities and maintenance staff
  • Sports and Wellness staff
  • Fine Arts faculty and staff who use theatre spaces and workshops
  • Arts and Science faculty and staff who work or study in a lab setting
  • Residence staff
  • Food services personnel
  • Event staff

Part 1: Fire Extinguisher mêskanâs course

For the online component of your training, enrol yourself in the Fire Extinguisher Use at MacEwan course on mêskanâs.

This course provides you with the knowledge you need to evaluate and approach fires and to effectively use a fire extinguisher. You also learn about the different classes of fires and types of fire extinguishers. Guidance on the proactive elimination of fire hazards is also covered.

Self-enrol

Part 2: Fire Extinguisher Hands-On training

Once you have completed the online component of the training in mêskanâs, you are eligible to register for the hands-on training component. Register through MacEwanLife within 90 days of completing the mêskanâs course. In the hands-on training, you apply what you learned in the online course and gain the experience necessary to competently use a hand-operated fire extinguisher.

This hands-on training component use LED-driven digital flames and a laser training extinguisher to provide a dynamic and realistic simulation for trainees. The system can sense if you are using the correct extinguisher, aiming properly, sweeping correctly and if you are an effective distance from the base of the fire. This ensures trainees are prepared for a real fire emergency.

Course certification is valid for three years.
