Audit a Course

Auditors are students who have been granted official permission to attend lectures in a course on the understanding that they may not participate in class discussions or use equipment, undertake assignments or sit for examinations, except at the invitation of the instructor. Auditing is a privilege. An audited course may not be credited toward the requirements for any certificate, diploma, or degree at MacEwan.

All students wishing to audit a course must complete the Application to Audit form. This includes program students who wish to change their status to “Audit” in any course. An auditing fee plus any applicable materials and activity fees will be assessed to each student for any regular funded course. If the course is a self-funded course, the total course fee will be charged for the auditing privilege. “Application to Audit” forms are available at the Office of the Registrar or any Campus Information Centre.

The student must complete, in full, part 1 of the “Application to Audit”. Part 2 must be completed by both the faculty advisor or instructor of the course and the program chair who is responsible for the course. The student record is then updated by the Office of the Registrar staff, fees are assessed, and outstanding fees paid. Normally, no more than one course in each term may be audited.

Students are not permitted to change status from credit to audit, or audit to credit, after the last day to add/drop courses in any term as per the MacEwan Calendar.

Here are some examples:

  • Student originally registers as an audit student and stays as an audit student.  Student pays 50% of the original tuition cost plus any material and/or activity fees.
  • Student registers as a credit student and changes to audit status before the last day to add/drop courses. Fee adjustments will be made in accordance with the course refund policy as printed on the Registration Statement.
  • Student registers as an audit student and changes to credit status before the last day to add/drop courses (as per the MacEwan Calendar) -- fees will be adjusted to reflect the original cost of the course.
  • Audit fees for self-funded courses are equal to the tuition fee of the self-funded/cost-recovery course.
