Japan’s economy is the third largest in the world behind the United States and China, and Japan is one of Canada’s most important economic and commercial partners. As a member of the G7, Japan is an important leader on the world stage and with the rise of the Asia Pacific region, its political influence continues to increase.

Learn the culture and language of a nation that remained isolated until the mid-19th century, but has since become an international leader in electronics, engineering and business.

Placement information

You must register in a level that is appropriate to your ability. If you register in the wrong course, you will be required to withdraw from it in the first week of the term, and you may not have another chance to register in the correct course. Taking the wrong course may also jeopardize your future transfer of credits.

You have little or no previous background in Japanese, or you have successfully completed Japanese 10 or equivalent. JAPN 101 (Fall)
You have successfully completed Japanese 10 and 20 or equivalent. JAPN 101 (Fall) or JAPN 102 (Winter). A placement test may be required. Please contact the Japanese coordinator for further
You have successfully completed Japanese 30 or equivalent. JAPN 201 (Fall). A placement test may be recommended; please contact the Japanese coordinator for further information.
You have completed JAPN 101 or equivalent with a grade of at least C-. JAPN 102 (Winter)
You have completed JAPN 102 or equivalent with a grade of at least C-. JAPN 201 (Fall)
You have completed JAPN 201 or equivalent with a grade of at least C-. JAPN 202 (Winter)
You do not have Japanese 30 or equivalent, BUT you lived in Japan for an extended period of time and you studied the language during your stay. A placement test may be required. Please contact the Japanese coordinator.
